The HRD Minister in a press conference on July 2018 told the media about the historic changes he is going to make in the JEE & NEET exam scheme for admissions in NITs & medical colleges in India.

According to the press release from now on NTA will conduct the NEET exam rather than CBSE. For more detailed picture first, let us take a view of NTA.

NTA stands for National Testing Agency, it is an autonomous organization, formed to organize competitive examinations like NEET, JEE, CAT, NET etc. It will conduct entrance examinations for admissions into premier engineering & medical colleges of India.

Now, about the changes introduced by the HRD minister in JEE & NEET exam scheme, the one & only major change introduced is that from now on NEET & JEE will be conducted twice a year instead of one. It is to be noted that there are no other changes done in the exam scheme.

JEE(Joint Entrance Examination) is an entrance exam for admission into IITs, NITs GFIs & other private engineering institutes in India. The JEE exam will be held in the month of Jan & Apr & the registration process for the same will begin in the month of September for Jan exam & in Feb for Apr exam. While the students can take both the exam in a year but it is not mandatory to appear in both or qualify them separately.

NEET(National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) is an entrance exam for admissions into MBBS & BDS courses in top medical colleges in India. NEET exam will be held in the month of Feb & May & the registration for it will start in October for first exam & in March for 2nd exam. As for JEE, it’s same here that it’s your choice whether you want to take one exam or both. For the students appearing in both the exams only the higher marks out of the two will be considered for admissions.

The eligibility criteria for both NEET & JEE will remain the same as listed below

Eligibility criteria for JEE 2019:

 

1. Date of Birth – Candidates born on or after October 01, 1994 are eligible. Relaxation by 5 years is given for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) candidates whose date of birth should be on or after October 01, 1989.

2. Year of Appearance in Qualifying Examination (QE)

Candidates must have passed their Class 12th Exam or any equivalent qualifying examination in 2017 or 2018

Those who are appearing in their Class 12th Exam or any equivalent qualifying examination in 2019 are also eligible to appear NTA JEE Main

Candidates studying from National Open School are also eligible.

3. The number of subjects studied in the Qualifying Examination (QE) – It is mandatory that all candidates must have studied five or more subjects in their class 12th/qualifying examination to be eligible to write NTA JEE Main.

4. Number of Attempts

Annual: Candidates will be allowed two attempts per year – once in January and the second time in April when the exams will be held.

A total number of attempts for each candidate: The number of attempts given to each candidate earlier was three in three consecutive years. It has been stated that there are no changes in eligibility so the total number of attempts calculated per student for three consecutive years will sum up to six. This is not as of yet clarified by the authorities and if changes are announced, the corrections will be published here.

Eligibility Criteria for NEET 2019:

1)The candidates must at least be 17 years in age as on December 31, 2019.

2)The age of the candidates must not be more than 25 years in age as on May 7, 2019.

3)The candidates in order to apply for NTA NEET 2019 must have qualified in Class 12 or qualifying examination or must be appearing in the same in 2019.

4)In the qualifying exam the candidates must have scored an aggregate of 50% (for unreserved), 45% (for Physically Handicapped -PH), and 40% (for reserved including the PH reserved) in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

5)Candidates are required to have studied Biology/Biotechnology with practicals in both Classes 11 and 12. Candidates with Biology as an additional subject in Class 12 alone are not eligible for NEET 2019.

6)Candidates are also required to undertake two years of regular and continuous study in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology”. This implies that no gap year is permitted between Classes 11 and 12.

The exam pattern & syllabus will remain the same as it was for the previous years. The question paper will contain 120 objective type questions, 30 from each subjects physics, chemistry, biology for NEET & Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics for JEE. Students will be awarded 4 marks for every correct answer & 1 mark will be deducted for an incorrect answer.
